11: 50 Days of 3:16

David was the greatest king Israel had ever known. He was strong, confident and had a heart for God. We know that he was a man of honour when it came to king Saul, not laying a hand on him even when Saul was hunting him trying to kill him. David weakness was his passion for women.

Her husband, however, went with her, weeping behind her all the way to Bahurim. Then Abner said to him, “Go back home!” So he went back.

2 Samuel 3:16

We often hear people writing and talking about David’s big sin with Bathsheba and the resulting murder of her husband. Many a sermon on this and how God restored him and the Psalms written by David in his grief. Yet here in 2 Samuel 3 we read about a time before David was king where took another woman from their husband. Micah was married to David by Saul when David had won a battle against the Philistines. Micah was Saul’s daughter, and when Saul realized the people were favouring David over him he married off Micah to another man. This wasn’t Sauls first daughter he had promised David and had done the same thing with her.  The main difference in this story compared the Bethseba story is we see is that David and Micah were already married and Saul had sent her away to marry another man. Why did David allow this man to ‘Go back home’ when he later in life had Bathsheba’s husband sent to the front lines to die?

It is believed that Micah and her new husband had not consummated their relationship. For whatever reason, he knew that this was not meant to be. Maybe he was waiting for King Saul to kill David before he made his move as to consummate the marriage. Because of this integrity, David allowed this man to live. In the Bathsheba story, David had already had sexual relation with her and she was now with child. Her husband was so dedicated and loyal to his King even when brought home on leave he would not touch his wife because his fellow soldiers were fighting and that’s where he needed to be. David was caught off guard by the man’s integrity and loyalty, and not knowing what else to do he sent the man to die on the front lines so that his act of adultery could be covered up.

So what can we take away today from this today? Integrity is an important value to have. As believers, we must take a stand for what is right. Even when standing up for our faith may lead us to persecution.  When we know something is wrong we need to avoid it. Just live Micah’s second husband who knew that consummating the marriage was wrong or Bathsheba’s husband who knew satisfying his own pleasures when those he served with were dying was selfish. Whatever you come across in life you need to make a choice and decide where your integrity is. God is calling us to men and woman or integrity.

Father, every day we have a multitude of choices to make and how we make them will decide our level of integrity.  We are praying for wisdom to make wise choices and stand up for what is right. Give us strength to oppose evil and choose what is right. Give us opportunities to reach other, letting our lives be an example fo your love. Amen
