In a jail setting a prisoner working hard time may be able to do enough good to cut his sentence down. This depends on what he or she is in jail for. Those in jail for life sentences cannot do enough good to be even considered a right to be freed. Even in the confinement of prison things that are deemed not allowed find a way into the prisoner’s lives knowing that is not to be done some still participate. Even those who have been released on parole know the life they have left behind, still continue on a path that will lead them back to the cell that held them. Accepting freedom does not mean embracing it.
“And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.”
Romans 7:18-19 NLT
We struggle through life trying to do good. Yet as much as we work in our own strength to do good our sinful presupposition weasels it’s way in and we follow its lead. We cannot do enough ‘good’ in our lives to make it to heaven. It just doesn’t work that way. We can’t do enough ‘good’ in this life to get Gods attention. We don’t have to collect enough ‘good’ deeds for Jesus to forgive us. In our own strength, good works or being good are fruitless.
We can freely accept Jesus as our saviour, he is waiting with arms wide open to love you, forgive you, cleanse you and live with you. Once you have accepted Jesus ‘it is no longer I that live but Christ who lives in me’. Our heart which now lives with Jesus can start doing amazing good works that can be fruitful. We are called to do amazing things within our relationship with Jesus. He promised us that the same things he did on earth we can do in his power, and more.
Why do we not see these things? Maybe it is because we still try to cling to our sinful ways, we accept Christ but forget to untie the boat from the dock. We’re afraid to let go completely as we feel if we do we may become lost in this ” religion”. We don’t want to be labelled a ” fanatic”, pride, status and such.
Today in spite of all that is happening in the world you personally need to make the choice, you need to give all to Jesus, letting him fully in control, untying the line to shore. You have been freed from your sin, you have accepted Christ into your life, now are you ready to embrace it and make it who you are? If you want to see Jesus do amazing things through you, ask him, start fulfilling the mission of sharing the love of Jesus to others. Invite people to church, pray alone and purposely with others as much as you can, read your word, and love those around you.
Father, we want to see amazing good things happen around us. I would love to see miracles happening daily, not to make a name for myself but to bring glory to your name. If I have tied myself up to my old life I cut the rope and give it all to you. I know you are in control and will guide me in the plan. Let me be effective in reaching others with your love, telling them about you and inviting them to church. They matter to you Jesus, so they matter to me. Amen
